DSG or Stick?

ARGH AUTOMATIC HEATHEN, BEGONE FROM ME.
Seriously though how is the car to live with? Have you had chance to give it a good run on some B roads?

I’m about get a lot of stick for this but it’s DSG, I’ve never had an auto before in my 6 years of driving but good manuals were hard to find. I miss the manual but the DSG is brilliant.

it’s super easy if you are just bimbling around, my current commute nets me 38mpg which is 12 miles of country roads. everything is just so easy, when you give it some the DSG is mostly amazing, the only issue is a little gap between you flooring it and it deciding the gear, but the might just be that the mx5 was NA and the box was a peach. Quick though, I raced a friend in his 3L z4 the other (on a private road) and if I used launch I would have had him beat. Lift off oversteer is available too.

That’s pretty impressive I only get just over 40mpg from the Twingo (although my driving doesnt help).
Yeah that gap might even just be turbo lag and I suppose you could always use the paddles if you wanted quicker kick down.
I get lift off oversteer in my car but I suspect the garbage tyres I have on the back play a big part in that haha.

I need to readjust to FWD after so long with RWD. Off power before turn in rather than always on like the MX-5, ESP has been saving it though. I like lift off but I don’t want to do it in my expensive (to me) car. I loved it in my Polo.

I loved the DSG on my old GTI. We liked it on the wife’s Jetta TDI Wagon (Golf Esate/Sportwagen in the EU) and I wanted to retrofit a GTI steering wheel with paddles to it. Didn’t happen, though.

during my search I found that not all GTI’s had paddles, I tested one and it sorta sucked the fun out of it. It is a relxing drive most of the time and is quick when I need it to be. Because I’m in the UK people don’t understand why I bought an auto, then I take them out in it and they change their mind. I’m not giving up on sticks but it’s nice for a change.

Most of the locals here in Belgium are amazed that I’m an American who drives and enjoys driving a stick.

do you ever call it a standard to confuse them?

I’ve never driven RWD on public roads so I’m pretty used to FWD. That said the cars I drive have so little power it hardly matters.

The MX5 occupies a sweet spot where you can wring it’s neck and not being in too much danger and it’s not too slow. As a result you carry speed everywhere, when you put your foot down in a bend, unless you kick the clutch it stays in check.

I really need to get behind the wheel of an MX5 at some point. I may be one of very few on here who havent driven one haha.

But my car has more jalop points due to being unavailable in the US and manual. Everyone know jalop points are worth their weight in gold (nothing).

How exactly are those crap? And are you talking about not getting in USA/Canada or Europe?
![]() 06/25/2015 at 18:51 |

I'm so confused! I wish we got those cars here in the U.S.!
![]() 06/25/2015 at 22:05 |

I was mainly asking what boring/crap cars (like the Camry) that aren’t available in Europe. But I wish we got those awesome wagons here. But noooo, we need crossovers and “SUVs” that can’t off road more than a curb or some grass. A wagon is very similar but lower.

How exactly did this get from “Last day at current job.” To talking about Camrys to what cars can you not get where?

Thanks for telling me that. On a slightly related story, yesterday, there was a “trending now” or whatever its called at the bottom of the screen and I commented on it, only to find out its a 2 year old post. The even better part is I got a reply. (If you don’t find my story as interesting as I do, tell me, I don’t mind).
